Our selection comes to us from Jeremie Mourat, whose father, Jean, purchased the property in 1974 near the Vouvray appellation of France's Loire Valley. Jeremie took over the estate in 2000 and immediately began converting it into organic farming.
Today, Mourat consists of 150 acres of grapes, which are now 15+ years of age. This is the point at which vines hit their stride and begin to produce their finest vintages. As Jeremie replanted over the years, he doubled the number of vines per acre. This allows more grapes to be harvested on each acre, but not at a loss of quality. The quality actually improves because now each vine is responsible for less fruit than before. By distributing the nutrients to less clusters, each grape attains more flavor.
Our selection is a blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Chardonnay. Unlike most appellations, Sauvignon Blanc is the prized grape here. Chardonnay plays a minor, but important role, by adding complexity to the blend. It is almost never bottled on its own.
The Romans planted grapes here more than 2,000 years ago and it has been held in high esteem ever since. The coolness of the Loire Valley is what accounts for the gripping acids present in the wines that hold the delicate fruit components in perfect balance.
Ours is perfection in a glass. From the herbal, apricot nose to the swashes of green apple on the palate, it would sing with shrimp scampi or soar with a mushroom risotto.
