Keeler Estate Vineyard had its genesis in 1989, when Craig and Gabriele Keeler discovered a picturesque hillside in Amity, Oregon. The property, which has views of Mary's Peak and Oregon's coastal mountains, was covered with overgrown blackberries and brambles amid forests, lakes, and streams. This stunning landscape was transformed into a biodynamic vineyard. Craig and Gabriele converted buildings once used for raising sheep into modern winemaking facilities. The practice of polyculture farming which is characterized by a natural ecosystem of diverse plant life, wildlife, and natural management techniques has ensured that the original beauty, wildlife, and vitality of the vineyard are equally maintained.
The Eola-Amity AVA is noted for cool afternoon ocean breezes during the warm ripening season. This is ideal for many varietals, including Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gamay, Gew?rztraminer, and Blaufrankisch. The soil at Keeler Estate is unique. Craig and Gabriele use the best methods to maximize their lands' natural potential. In addition to biodynamic farming, Keeler estate practices minimal manipulation with native yeasts and low sulfur additives. This particular Pinot Gris is fermented and aged in stainless steel, then concrete, before it is finished in neutral oak.
The distinctive copper color of this Pinot Gris is the result of significant skin contact. The nose exhibits fresh-cut grass and bright fruit that is anchored by crisp acidity and minerality on the palate. This is fuller than the usual light-to-medium-bodied expression of Pinot Gris, yet it remains crisp and dry with slightly oxidative notes and tannins. Pair with some classic fish tacos, grilled lemongrass chicken, Vietnamese vermicelli bowls, or Indian spiced chickpea dishes. If you'd like to pair this wine with cheese, go with an aged Gouda.
