Our selection comes from Ironstone Winery, one of the oldest wineries in Lodi, having been established just shy of 100 years ago. The original property was purchased by John Kautz as a farm to support his family. His son took over in 1952 and slowly introduced grapes into the agricultural mix. Today Kautz Farms oversees approximately 7,000 acres of grapes.

Lodi is probably the most enigmatic wine appellation in California. On a map, it is situated in the Central Valley, known for a very warm climate that can only produce mediocre grapes-from which you can make mediocre wines. All the big wineries are in the Central Valley, where most of the grapes are grown.

It is located between Sacramento and Modesto along Highway 99. But, there is a very curious thing about its location. The cool, moist breeze from the San Pablo Bay nearly 50 miles away, travels eastward for almost 40 miles along the tributaries created by glacial movement. These conditions make Lodi cooler in the summer by nearly 20 degrees. In grape terms, that's monumental.

And monumental is pretty much what we get from Lodi Zinfandel. The 60 or more years that the vines have been around helps produce grapes of incredible depth and complexity. Strawberry and plum aromas fill the glass. Cherry blossom, black pepper and spice descend on the palate and all join for a lavish finale.
