We're going to let you in on a little secret if you promise to keep it to yourselves. It's something that many of us in the wine business have known for decades, but if it gets out to the general public, there won't be enough good wines for the rest of us. The Columbia Valley in Washington makes some of the finest red wine in the world. Their specialty is Bordeaux varietals, but there's not much they can't make that isn't spectacular.

Washington's big advantage over California is its latitude. Coincidently, this is the same case in Bordeaux. The higher latitude means that the sun is out longer during the critical months of summer when the grapes are ripening. Most importantly, that sun doesn't come with the accompanying heat as it does further south. As a result, the grapes mature slower and thus emerge with more flavor.

Our selection was crafted by the powerhouse producer, Bronco Wine Company, which was founded over 100 years ago. They are the largest vineyard owner in California and produce wines in all categories and even in other states.

This stunning wine is a blend of 62% Merlot, 30% Syrah and 8% a mixture of Sangiovese and other varietals. As is typical of wines from the Columbia Valley, the first thing that hits you in the nose is that blast of fruit. It continues in the mouth and is held in check by the substantial tannins, ready to wreak havoc on a blackened ribeye or wild boar sausages.
