Villa D'Oc Domitia is produced by the Fonjoya winery in the Languedoc region of France. The winery is a joining of two co-ops, St Felix St Jean and St Saturnin de Lucian and takes its name from "fon" which means fountain and "joya" for joy. The beauty of the wines from here is their value. They are not far from both the Cotes du Rhone appellation and produce many of the same varietals, but at a fraction of the cost.
The clay and limestone mixed with stones in the vineyard is the perfect setting for the classic Rhone varietals. In this case, the makeup is 40% Grenache, 30% Carignan and 30% Syrah. All of their vineyards are sustainable will eventually become organic.Areas like this are interesting because they have found the best formula that works with the terroir, or ecosystem of the vineyard. This marriage didn't happen by accident. It took centuries to figure it out. What we fail to realize is that wine has been experimented with here for thousands of years, so they had a lot more time to figure things out.
Here, the blend is as classic as is the wine. Grenache is the cornerstone. Its wild grape and cranberry flavors are enticing and welcome. Those characteristics are complemented by Carignan's earthy quality and acidity. The combination is brought together by the Syrah with its encompassing blueberry scented tannins. Grilled meats or wild turkey would please all who joined in.
