Once again, we feature a blockbuster from our good friends at O'Neill Vintners. Although we've never met, we've come to know winemaker, Steven DeCosta, by the superb wines he creates and his meticulous attention to detail. Steven uses his foundation in chemistry and microbiology to create wines with a varietal focus of aromatics and flavors that consumers will enjoy. We certainly do.
Part of his passion is instilled in him by owner Jeff O'Neill whose family history in grape growing goes back over 100 years. That's quite impressive for California considering they've only been in the wine game for 150 years or so as opposed to Europe who counts their wine history in millenniums.
Very few wineries can put out the quality of this Pinot Noir at this price, except for O'Neill. One must credit their vast array of vineyards and contacts where they have access to more grapes than most. So, given any conditions, any issues or anything else, they can always find what they need every year. They've certainly found it here. Most winemakers will tell you that Pinot Noir is the most difficult grape to grow and vinify. Like a fussy child, it needs constant attention. O'Neill has the manpower and technology to make world class Pinot at a fraction of the cost.
Here are all the ripe cherry, spice and cotton candy you could wish for. Wave after wave of enticing extracts are the order here. All the flavors are held in check by the serious tannins and are ready to tackle braised lamb shanks or chicken paprikash.
