Drifting is another winner from Ironstone Winery, one of the pioneers in the Lodi appellation located between Sacramento and Modesto. What is amazing about Lodi is that it houses some of the oldest wine treasures in California. Those being vineyards that are 50 to 100 years old. Older vines don't produce as much as they used to, but what they do produce is better than ever. Sound familiar?

The land here is not as fertile as the rest of the San Joaquin Valley, which suits the grapes just fine. The hills were created by seismic occurrences which brought rocks up almost to the surface and raised the entire area. Those rocks contain substantial minerals and provide much needed drainage for the vines.

Ironstone was founded by the Kautz family some 100 years ago and a few of those vines are still producing. It's quite a testament for Ironstone as well as the wineries who grew up around them. To understand how its importance has grown, just follow the cost of land there. It's pretty amazing.

Our blend is 80% Sauvignon Blanc, predominately from Lodi, with equal dollops of Pinot Grigio and Chenin Blanc. It boasts the snappy acidity that Sauvignon Blanc is known for, but also carries flashes of melon from the Pinot Grigio and pineapple from the Chenin Blanc. A perfect foil for swordfish with chopped tomato and garlic or cioppino.
