There are two things we love writing about on these pages. We love the people who defy the odds, follow their passion and create great wines. We also love featuring wines that are out of the norm, under the radar and over the top.

With this selection, we get to do both. Casa Marin was founded by winemaker Maria Luz Marin in 2000. The winery is located in the San Antonio Valley of Chile, barely a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean. She was told it wasn't a good area because it was just too cold, too this and too that, not enough of this or that.

Why should we tell you what she's accomplished? We'll let Decanter Magazine tell you who twice named Casa Marin one of the top 50 wineries in the world or that several writers who have anointed her with high scores and top honors like "Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World."

And then there's Gewurztraminer, one of our favorite grapes. Why and how it has fallen from favor is a great mystery. Literally everybody that tastes this wine loves it. That's no shock.

The name says it all. "Gewurtz" means "spicy" in German. The grape is a clone of the Traminer grape that a few hundred years ago winemakers noticed was different, producing a spicier wine than the rest. And there you have it.

Besides the spice are the lovely floral qualities, subtle stone fruit, apricot, Asian pear and apple. From a spicy Szechuan dishes to scallops with saffron, it's just pure pleasure in the glass.
