After almost 50 years of choosing wines for our members, you would think that we've seen it all, but this selection is one of the reasons we haven't. It's the first wine we've ever featured that is named after a railroad engineer, George Gregg. Apparently, George was quite a personality as he traversed California by rail and was also a wine connoisseur. As he delivered wines to wineries in the mid-19th Century, he took a liking to them and their makers. He was so popular that a winery in Paso Robles actually named their tasting room after him.

Allen Lombardi of Thomas Allen, makers of our selection in Lodi, was familiar with the stories of George Gregg, but since the name was already taken for a tasting room, he decided to name a wine after him. His vineyard was the first planted in Lodi in 1850, putting him right in George Gregg's route.

The grapes for our selection were sourced from a vineyard in Lodi now farmed by the fourth generation of grape growers. It boasts some of the oldest vines in Lodi, which is what accounts for the impeccable presence of this wine.

The dark brooding color more than suggests the impressive wine to follow. With waves of black currants, blackberry and chocolate, it enters and lingers on the palate, depositing all its lusciousness in priceless amounts. The depth and breadth is worthy of a tri-tip marinated in garlic and soy and BBQ'd to perfection.
