Sylvia Filippini's family began growing grape in Paso Robles in the 1960s. At the time there were maybe three or four wineries and a few scattered vineyards. Most of them, like that of Sylvia's family, were run by Italian immigrants who came bearing vines from their homeland.

In the beginning the Paso Robles area was known for big, buxom Zinfandels that were the delight of many wine aficionados. But slowly, the winegrowers there realized that like any other large region, all the sub-regions are not the same. In time, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc dotted the vineyard countryside and each had its own heartbeat.

Our selection is a Sauvignon Blanc from Sylvia's award-winning vineyards, which are broken up into several different parcels to make use of the different soils and microclimates available. This wine comes off their estate vineyard, Domenico, with only three acres of Sauvignon Blanc planted. We wish there were more.

It is the quintessential wine from this grape with all the lovely pear and apple scents, spice and herbal flavors and gripping finish we have come to know and adore. It's bright, shiny fruit would make shellfish in a tomato broth, with just a touch of cream, shine as much as the wine.
