Our selection is made by our friends at Matchbook in Yolo County. The winery is run by the Giguiere family, who pioneered winemaking Yolo by being the first winery there. They were also the best. They sold the winery for a zillion dollars and retired. Okay, one thing you can't do in the wine business is to retire.

So, they founded Matchbook, and we're glad they did. Over the years, they have presented us with nothing short of great wines to offer our members, and this one is as good as it gets.

The history of Petit Verdot is fascinating. It is one of the five grapes that go into the wines of Bordeaux. But it was only a small fraction, way behind Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, until recently. Although, a hundred years ago, it was equal in quantity to Cabernet Sauvignon.

The reason for this is that Petit Verdot ripens later than all the other grapes. This makes it susceptible to late rains or even hail. But it produces very dark and imposing wine, which has always been sought after. So, it was uprooted for Merlot, which ripens much faster and is much safer as a result.

Fast forward to today, and we see a different climate, one that is much friendlier to Petit Verdot and thus puts it back in favor. The result is a dense, inky black wine with loads of flavor, length, and presence. Yet, it can also handle rich tomato sauces and as much garlic as you can count to go with the charred meat.
