Piledriver is made by superstar winemaker Adam LaZarre, of LaZarre Wines in Paso Robles. Adam has an impressive and diverse resume. He's known to make big, impressive wines like our Piledriver, Rex Goliath and Cycles Gladiator, as well as superb Rieslings and aromatic whites from Elliston Vineyards and Jekel Winery.

Adam's greatest asset may be his wife, Angie, whose resume (although different) is no less impressive. She sold wines at the magnificent Tutto Bueno restaurant in Monterey, and then at the Scheid Winery and Smith & Hook tasting rooms along California's central coast. Besides working the tasting room, raising three children and running the wine club, Angie helps with the winemaking and crush. It's probably as close to a family affair as you can get.

And this family has major roots in Paso Robles. Let's start off with the fact that all the grapes for our selection come from this unequaled region. The Paso Robles address alone spells expensive, so it was with a bit of trepidation that we approached this offering. After all, at this price, how good could it be?

One thing you should never do is gasp with wine in your mouth. It was a close call when I was tasting this wine, as it was positively sensational. The blend is as eclectic as the guy who crafted it. With 55% Dry Creek Zinfandel leading the charge, you can't miss. Then comes 34% Sangiovese and 11% Petite Sirah to literally round it out and add more nuance and flesh than you'd find in most wines.

The result is a host of bramble berry, pepper and spice that thrills the senses like no other.
