The Filippini family purchased their sprawling Paso Robles property in the early 1960s from country music singer, Buck Owens. 20 years later, the wine boom gave farmers like them the opportunity to grow grapes instead of hay and cattle, which were the main commodities there up to that time. The warm days and cool nights made Paso Robles a great location for growing grapes.

Like most new grapegrowers, they weren't sure which grapes would do best, so they planted many of them in different parts of the vineyard and vinified them separately to find out. If that sounds like a long, slow and expensive proposition, it is. It took 10 years to decide which grapes did the best and one of those grapes, to the surprise of everyone, was Petit Verdot. Though it is one of the grapes that make up Bordeaux, it is known as rather finnicky and takes a long time to ripen. This can be a problem in years when the sunshine of summer is over rather quickly and the grapes haven't gotten there yet. This doesn't happen in the Filippini's vineyards, as they know the best times to harvest the grapes.

Perfect harvests every year means perfect wine, and this is one of the most consistent Petit Verdots we've ever encountered. While boasting some of the same flavors as Cabernet and Merlot, it also exhibits a unique, almost tropical component that blends perfectly with the plums and berries. This combination presents an exciting selection with elegance and grace to spare, not to mention, it pairs quite well with tournedos of beef or a veal rib chop with black truffles.
