Our selection is a rarity indeed. A white wine made in Portugal's Douro Valley is almost unheard of. The Douro is Portugal's most famous wine area, producing one of the great wines of the world, Port. White wine is barely a thought. Yet, when one is produced, it is very carefully crafted and sought-after. Our selection is definitely one of them.

The grandmother of the owner, Sophia Bergqvist, was given the property as a christening present in 1906. That infant, Claire Feueheerd, grew up on the property. The family-owned a shipping company. When the shipping business was sold, Claire kept the property and passed it on to the current generation.

In 1988, Sophia and her father, Tim, decided to revive the property and founded Quinta de la Rosa as a top Port producer. It consists of six prime vineyards totaling 140 acres and, since 1990, has produced one of the top wines of the Douro.

The grape varieties here are so distinctive; we have honestly never heard of them. Viosinho is the prized white of the region, making up 45% of the blend. Codega do Larinho adds a floral component and takes up 30% and Rabigato, an aromatic grape with high acidity takes up 20%. Gouveio is last at 5%. All the grapes are native to the Douro. The result is a very complex set of aromas and flavors, including perfume, floral, and citrus notes that require imposing dishes like veal saltimbocca, teriyaki chicken, and tom yum soup.
