It's always wonderful to see a name like Geyser Peak on the docket once again. We've been fans for more than a third of their 140 year existence and will always be. Our relationship goes back to the founding of The Wine of the Month Club as it was one of the few wineries in Sonoma. As a matter of fact, it was the 29th winery to be bonded in California. Today, there over 4,000.
The winery was a family business for decades. Then corporate interests took over and we're glad to report that it is back in the hands of a family who is restoring it to its former glory. Steve Kreps began his career in 1973 as a sales manager covering 10 states. In 1988 he formed his own country to help wineries find their place in an expanding climate. That was the beginning of Quintessential. Today, they control over 50 wineries in 11 countries.
When legendary winemaker Darryl Groom retired, he left a gaping hole in the operation. Darryl was one of the most dynamic winemakers in California and recently won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sonoma Vintners Association. They were able to attract Bob Pepi as their new winemaker and thus never skipped a beat.
Our selection is a blend of 66% Zinfandel and near equal amounts of Syrah, Merlot and Malbec. With 18 months in French oak barrels, this selection sports all the sweet, tart berry flavors and exacting finish we would expect. A pot roast or roast chicken would do nicely.
