Steve Millier is the mind behind Delta Block Chardonnay. With over 30 years of winemaking experience in California, Steve became a founding Winemaker and Vice President for Ironstone Vineyards in 1989. With Steve's experience, Ironstone gained recognition for his winemaking by garnering the prestigious "Prix d'Excellence Award". This award was given for meritorious achievement from the International Du Vin at VinExpo in 1997. The winery's Meritage was one of only three American Wines awarded this designation, from 4,820 international entries.
This 2018 Chardonnay from Lodi was selected from vineyards in the sub-AVA (American Viticultural Area, AVA is a federally recognized geographic designation) of Mokelumne River. Lodi's Mediterranean climate includes warm summer days and cool nights, benefits from the Pacific Ocean breezes each day. This allows the grapes to develop ripe flavors and good acidity. The grapes for this Chardonnay were harvested at night. Then were brought into the winery where the free run juice was selected. The goal was to produce a wine that showcases California grapes with classic methods of sustainable viticulture. The result is a fresh, crisp wine with a wonderful balance.
Delta Block Chardonnay is unoaked. The butter, cream, and vanilla notes that characterize many oaked Chardonnays are absent here. Instead, this medium-bodied wine is full of citrus, melon, and tropical fruits reminiscent of the Chablis style of France. Unoaked Chardonnay is the perfect wine for shellfish, either raw oysters or cooked and incorporated in dishes like spaghetti alla vongole or moules marinieres.
