This 2016 Penrosa Sauvignon Blanc is from Bodegas Barcelo Estates, one of Spain's most important wine groups. From its origins as a wine producer in 1876, the company has built up a considerable worldwide reputation for the quality of its wines. Today, Barcelo has vineyards and winemaking facilities in five of the most prestigious Spanish wine growing regions, including Castilla y Leon, in the heart of Spain.
Made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes selected at peak ripeness, the grapes are gently pressed upon arrival at the winery to obtain the must, which, after static cold settling, is fermented clean. The fermentation is slow and carried out at low temperature to help preserve the varietal aromas. The Sauvignon Blanc is blended with Verdejo, a representative example of modern Spanish white winemaking.
Verdejo is a versatile native grape to the region and rightly being used again, after many centuries of neglect. Like Sauvignon Blanc, interest in Verdejo was rejuvenated in the 1970s and has been a staple of Spanish viticulture ever since. Verdejo wines are lightly aromatic and often herbaceous, making them suitable for pairing with Sauvignon Blanc, which brings distinctive tropical and grassy aromas with fresh acidity. This wine shines now and should be consumed young. Pair this with non-fatty fish, seafood, pasta, and fresh salads.
