Two Angels is crafted by none other than Robert Pepi who for years has been known as "Mr. Sauvignon Blanc." Pepi doesn't make much of those accolades. He just does what he does and has done with precision for nearly 40 years. The grapes for his latest gem comes from Sonoma County and one of the newest appellations in California, High Valley in Mendocino. It is so named because of its 2,000-foot elevation and its 20-30 degree slopes, which contribute to excellent drainage.

The label is a painting made in 1591 by Jacob de Backer. It is said to depict the aftermath of consuming too much wine. Pepi calls it the first alcohol warning. "Use wine sparingly or suffer the consequences." Hard to argue with that. Sauvignon Blanc is a very adaptable grape. We've featured great ones from all over the world especially France, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, and California. However, in the very few special places where this grape hits its pinnacle, especially when handled by a master, it outranks all others.

Because of its altitude, High Valley is naturally cooler than the floor. This makes the growing season longer so the grapes spend more time on the vine sucking up vital nutrients. The slope of the vineyards adds the right balance for drainage. Two Angels is a spectacular rendition of the grape. As usual, Pepi uses no oak and picks early to assure spectacular acidity. The peach and pear blossom notes are just what would be needed for our swordfish recipe or pasta with clams.
