August Mas purchased 22 acres of what would become the family estate in 1892. It is on the southern coast of France, not far from Montpellier in the Languedoc. It wasn't until 1934 that Raymond Mas actually planted vineyards on the property.

His son, Paul, added 300 acres 20 years later and made it the property it is today. It is now run by the fourth generation Mas, Jean-Claude, who has been at the helm since 2000.

Grapes have been grown in the area since Roman times. But, it's only been in the last 40 years that truly great wine has been made here. The Languedoc has incredibly diverse soils and microclimates that can accommodate almost any grape.

For centuries, producers shipped the bulk of the wines made here to less fortunate areas to help "strengthen" their weaker wines. Very little wine was actually bottled in the Languedoc.

Then a few enterprising grape growers like Mas said, "we can do better," and they did. The changes have been revolutionary. Half a century ago, you could barely get a wine this good from Bordeaux, let alone here!

This wine is a testament to the hard work and dedication people like Mas spent their lives on. The wine explodes on the palate with ripe plum, anise, coffee and currants, from top to bottom. The finish is deep and concentrated. Not for the faint of palate.
