Our selection comes to us from Terravant Wine Company in Buellton, just a few miles from the center of the Santa Rita Hills appellation in Santa Barbara County. It was no coincidence that they founded their winery operation there in 2008. Santa Rita Hills was already considered one of the top growing areas for Pinot Noir.
In 2019 they purchased Summerland Winery and along with their vineyard contracts and distribution network, they become one of the largest powerhouse wine operations in the Central Coast. They recently expanded into Napa Valley and we have no doubt they will be making inroads, as well as amazing wine from other premium areas in the US. Dark Earth literally takes its name from the ground in which the grapes are grown. It is almost black in color due to the natural organic matter deposited there for millions of years. It is what accounts for the intense and indulgent plethora of flavors that invade your senses and leave you wanting more.
Just a few miles from the ocean, the grapes benefit from the very cool nights during the growing season, which protect the natural acids from dissipating while producing a spectacular finish. The grapes are picked in the morning to preserve their freshness and fermented in cold tanks to extract color and nuance. They are then left to rest in barrels for 24 months, depositing morsels of flavor daily. It delivers incomprehensible extracts of cinnamon, clove, cotton candy and plum in a swirl of excitement ready for seared ahi or a venison chop with black truffles.
