There are times when we get a wine whose story is almost as good as the wine. This is one of those times. All we could do is shake our heads when told this winery has been in the same family since 1749! That's before America was even a country!

The chateau is due east of Bordeaux and shares much of the topography, not to mention the grapes, of its famous neighbor. Jean-Francois and Sylvie Deffarge run the winery with their two sons, Benjamin and Quintin. Quixotically, "Les Frangins" translates into "brothers," as the two brothers drew their pictures on the label.

The entire vineyard of 128 acres is organic and sustainable, meaning they use recycled everything, they use no chemicals in the vineyard, and they are certified as such.

Our blend is a classic rendition of a fine Bordeaux, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in equal proportions. The south-facing hillsides offer limestone and clay soils for nutrients, drainage and heat retention, just like Bordeaux.

What they don't share with Bordeaux is the price. Move this chateau a few miles west and the price would double. But, the wine wouldn't change much.

Here is all the lovely plum, anise, licorice and black cherry flavors and extracts we would expect. It is a bit lighter on the palate than its neighbors, but that only means it can complement more dishes. From red meat to game, fowl and even vegetarian dishes. It seems to hit the spot, as it has for a mere 270 years.
