So, what's next after one of the largest cable channels in the world ends one of the most successful television series in history? Of course, name a wine after it! But, HBO didn't get where it is today by doing things haphazardly. When they decide to make a wine, it's with the same precision and detail that goes into their Emmy Award winning television shows.
In this case it's partnering with grape grower and winemaker Bob Cabral, a 30-year wine veteran who literally grew up in the vineyard. Cabral has had his wines ranked as high as any, culminating in being honored by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as Winemaker of the Year in 2011.
For his first offering, Cabral chose the cool climate of the Central Coast where he had a plethora of great vineyards to choose from, as well as many varietals to consider. For our selection, he chose a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 18% Petite Sirah and 12% Tempranillo. The beauty of this blend is that you can actually taste what each varietal adds to the whole. Obviously, Cabernet's sweeping presence dominates the senses, but then comes the soothing qualities of the Merlot, the tingle of Petite Sirah and finally the lushness of Tempranillo. The brooding color signals the large black fruit in the nose, followed by cinnamon spice, licorice and leather. This united amalgam would generously adorn pork ribs rubbed with chiles, grilled wild turkey or any other feast fit for a king.
