Rive Leone was a fine wine merchant in Italy's Piedmont district around the turn of the Century. He was a jovial and colorful fellow who seemed larger than life and was known to make outrageous statements. His most known and famous outburst was when tasting a great wine in a crowd. He would shout "Marca Leone," which means it was crafted by him, even if it wasn't.
Our selection is crafted by the powerhouse importing and distribution company, Mack & Schuhle, founded in 1939 by the two families in the name. Their purpose was to find small, independent growers to craft exceptional wines. The company is still family owned and continues making exceptional wines. Barbaresco is one of the greatest wines in Italy. It is grown alongside its famous neighbor, Barolo, and crafted from the samegrape, Nebbiolo. It is about half the size of Barolo, ergo, by very strict law, makes half as much wine.
Nebbiolo got its name from the word, "nebbia," which means "fog." It is so named because it grows best in places where there is fog in the vineyards in the morning and gradually lifts to allow the sun to ripen the grapes. This makes for a mandatory long growing season because Nebbiolo has high natural acids and the longer time on the vine forces them to decline slowly. This combination produces absolute perfection in wine. The rich concentration of ripe cherry, anise and plum with a startling finish is perfect with a grilled rack of lamb or a rare venison chop.
