A funny thing happened to Tanat when it came to Uruguay. It became delicious. A similar thing happened to Malbec when it came to Argentina. Either the French paid no attention to these grapes, or the grapes just happened to love their new surroundings.

Bodega de Marichal has been in the family since its founding 80 years ago. In 1910, Isabelino Marichal, whose family were originally from the Canary Islands, settled in Etchevarria, Canelones, Uruguay. He was the first to plant the Tannat variety there. In 1938, the family set up a small winery composed of underground tanks in a cave in order to achieve the best conditions in winemaking.

Tannat is originally from southwest France in the Madiran AOC. How it came to the Canary Islands and then Uruguay is still a mystery to wine historians. But the fact that it did and became successful is what jumpstarted the Uruguayan wine industry.

Uruguay enjoys the ideal geographical location to excel in the production of fine wines. It is located in the southern hemisphere between the 30? and 35? parallels, as are Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The clay-based soil and the balanced distribution of sun, rainfall, and temperature in Uruguay are optimal for the growth of the vines.

Our selection is another powerful expression of the grape. Large and lovely in the nose, the dark chocolate and dense black cherry on the palate could descend on wild boar sausages or braised pork shoulder.
