Our selection comes from Terravant Wine Company in Buellton, a winery nobody ever heard of, yet they are one of the largest wine producers in the state. They don't produce wine under their own label. They act as a production facility for others in their $30 million location. Occasionally they will craft a specific brand when they find something unusually good and that's when they come to us.
Terravant owns vineyards but also contacts with many other vineyards across the state and in other countries making them a force to be reckoned with anywhere in the world. In spite of their size, quality is their first concern. It has to be or they wouldn't be as successful as they are.
They are able to pick and choose the best grapes available even if that choice is in the same vineyard. Vines in one part of the vineyard may produce slightly different wines than another. Knowing those differences and blending accordingly is what makes the difference between simple and great. Such was the case here.
Our selection was crafted to accentuate bold, ripe flavors of black cherry and plum. It is full-bodied, with sweet tannins, spice, complex fruit essences and a lingering finish. It begins with aromas of vanilla, black fruit and spice with a hint of tobacco. The obvious, but well-balanced, tannins present an amalgam of flavors bound to be a hit with a seared New York steak, a Shiitake mushroom pasta or grilled pork chop with a garlic/chive sauce.
