All the salesman had to say is that Cirque du Vin is made by Peach Canyon in Paso Robles. That would have been enough for us because we knew we were already going to love it. To no surprise, we loved it. But then again, we have loved this wine since their first vintage in 1988. Peachy Canyon was founded by Nancy and Doug Beckett with the concept of specializing in Zinfandel and Zinfandel-based wines. It wasn't much of a stretch. After all, Zinfandel was still a very popular grape and Paso Robles was becoming the main destination for it.
But little by little, Zinfandel fell out of favor. We believe because winemakers played with it so much, consumers got confused as to what they would get. Would it be white or pink, would it be light or as strong as a Port? The answer was all of the above. The moral is that a confused customer is not a customer. What is nothing short of remarkable is that throughout all these changes, Peach Canyon just kept on making Zinfandel, and every year they would sell out. Some years faster than others. The reason? It is just plain delicious.
Our selection is 54% Zinfandel and 32% Cabernet Sauvignon. It possess all of the ripe, rich strawberry character we expect from them. Aging in French, Hungarian, and American oak just adds more complexity to the fire. Dark plum and berries are the stars here along with earthy hints and a penetrating finish. A Santa Maria tri-tip would be just ticket.
