Our selection is crafted by the Scheid Family, one of the first families of wine in California. Al Scheid purchased Monterey property in 1972 and since then has built one of the most successful wine operations in California. Al was looking at his purchase as an investment, one that doesn't usually pay high dividends as we know. But, the family has been able to be successful despite the odds.
It was early in the wine game and Monterey was a relatively unknown area, so the entry cost was much less than Napa and Sonoma. Al was also environmentally conscious, way before it was fashionable and is now a part of the Sustainable Winegrowing Program whose goal is to provide long-term sustainability for the California wine community.
At the time it was thought Monterey was too cool to ripen grapes. We later learned that the climate was more of a benefit than a hindrance once you learn how to grow your grapes. That was achieved. Now, of course, Monterey has become one of the most revered appellations in the US. The vineyards are also organic and 100% wind powered. Our selection consists of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from their estate vineyards. It also includes Syrah, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Grenache from the warmer Paso Robles area which is where the big and bold hails.
Aromas of dark fruits and spice fill the air. The flavors follow suit offering luscious plum and blueberry mixed with clove and vanilla. This selection needs a charred steak or a bold cassoulet with which to shine.
